Anova’s Jab Smart project was set up in late-2017 to respond to HIV among people who Inject drugs (PWID) in City of Johannesburg. PWID are at particular risk of HIV and suffer high levels of stigma and prejudice, often being denied access to essential health services. Jab Smart is a peer-led project that provides a range of harm reduction services to PWID. The project is implemented together with the COJ Health Department, and it is supported by Global Fund through its partner NACOSA.

Anova is looking for five Site Coordinators to join the project. Site coordinators will be responsible for managing a team of PWID peer educators, coordinate and arrange programme activities. People who are former or current drug users will be given preference.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Coordinate activities of peer educators to cover all sites, conduct regular planning meetings with peer educators, and support and monitor activities.
  • Conduct regular mapping activities with peer educators in the sites.
  • Work closely with the peer educators and HTS officers to ensure successful referral and follow-up.
  • Work with the Advocacy Officer to conduct linking, sensitisation and engagement with stakeholders including DSD and SAPS.
  • Work with peer educators to mobilise PWID to understand and make use of harm reduction services
  • Monitor stock levels of commodities at sites and oversee distribution by the peer educators.
  • Identify and address gaps of services for PWID/PWUD
  • Working with the data capture, consolidate data and other information from peer educators, and prepare and submit monthly and quarterly reports
  • Represent the project at meetings and other spaces as directed.

Essential qualifications and experience

  • Grade 12
  • Previous experience on a PWID project or knowledge of drug-using scene and networks in COJ
  • Previous experience on an HIV/AIDS programme would also be a recommendation
  • Able to communicate effectively in English as well as one other local language
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Staff management and workshop facilitation experience would be advantageous
