GSH-HIV Mental Health Group in conjunction with the ANOVA Health Institute will be presenting the “Mind, body, HAART” symposium, on August 11th & 12th, 2011 at the Upper Eastside Hotel in Cape Town. The purpose of the symposium is to explore the mental health needs of people living with HIV/AIDS, with a view to encouraging integrated care and reducing the impact of mental disorders on people living with HIV.

 

Recent developments in HIV mental health treatment and care will be discussed and practical skills training on the assessment of common mental disorders and psychotropic prescribing will be offered. The symposium is aimed at clinical doctors andnurses, service providers, health service managers, and researchers workingwith people living with HIV/AIDS.

 

The conference has been made available through funding from USAID/PEPFAR.

BURSARIES will be awarded based on motivations submitted to the conference organizer. Preference will be given to clinical doctors and nurses working in primary HIV care.

A limited number of MEDIA BURSARIES are also available.

CPD accreditation is offered.

 

The conference will consist of:

  • Presentations given by leading researchers and clinicians specialising in mental health in HIV
  • Skills building workshops on psychotropic prescribing in HIV, assesment of common mental disorders in HIV, and basic counseling skills for health care professionals
  • Presentation and discussion of HIV Pshchiatry Referral Service case studies
  • Review of mental health programmmes and services currently available
  • Panel discussion on, 'The role of mental health in HIV/AIDS care: Where are we now and where are we heading?
