The International Maternal Paediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Network (IMPAACT) is a cooperative group of institutions, investigators, and other collaborators organized for the purpose of evaluating potential therapies for HIV infection and its sequelae in the infant, paediatric, adolescent and pregnant women populations.

Dr. James McIntyre is the International Vice-Chair of the IMPAACT network, the senior international position in the collaboration. He is centrally involved in the management of the work of the IMPAACT network.

As one of the network's major achievements, IMPAACT finalised and opened its highest priority protocol, P1077 PROMISE “Promoting Maternal and Infant Survival Everywhere”. Dr James McIntyre is protocol Vice Chair for this very important study. The main objectives of this study are to maximize prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV by using a variety of antenatal and postnatal strategies in different geographic and resource settings, in both breast feeding and formula feeding populations, and to optimize health of women with high CD4 cell counts and their infants. This study will be the largest interventional study ever to be implemented by the Network, with a sample size of approximately 8 000 (5 950 mother-infant pairs and 2 000 mothers).
