Anova collaborates on a number of international projects and committees that are research oriented.

Dr. James McIntyre is the Programme Principal Investigator of the Comprehensive International Programme of Research on AIDS (CIPRA-SA)  grant and has led the grant since inception. CIPRA-SA is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Division of AIDS (DAIDS) and is in the final year. In South Africa the collaborating institutions include the Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU), Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU), Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit (RMPRU), of the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS), the University of Cape Town (UCT), the University of Stellenbosch (US) and Contract Laboratory Services (CLS).

CIPRA-SA is a collaborative, comprehensive, multidisciplinary, multicentre integrated programme of innovative and relevant research on AIDS in South Africa to address the appropriate treatment for adults and children in a family model, TB prevention and the development of less costly diagnostic and monitoring laboratory tests.

The CIPRA-SA projects have built research capacity at the collaborating sites to undertake the highest quality clinical trials. Important study results have shown that nurse-monitored antiretroviral treatment is as effective as doctor monitored care, a critical issue for low-resource settings. The initial results of CIPRA-SA Project 2, the CHER trial, which demonstrated that early diagnosis and treatment of infants infected with HIV can save lives, have already led to global policy changes.
