Mental health and HIV
As in many public healthcare systems, mental health is seldom prioritised in South Africa. Neuropsychiatric disorders are highly prevalent in PLWHA (people living with HIV and AIDS). Rates between ten percent and 50 percent have been reported – depending on disorder type and disease stage. These disorders are associated with high-risk behaviours, decreased health-seeking behaviour, poor adherence to medication and accelerated disease progression. Despite their frequent occurrence and their negative effects, neuropsychiatric disorders remain a neglected aspect of care.
