Programme Areas

 

The Anova Health Institute’s work stretches across a wide range of issues or programme areas.

Whilst all Anova-led projects are devoted to working tirelessly towards increasing access to health services, testing, prevention and provision of treatment, they do so via distinctly different access points.

Anova thus stretches itself widely to incorporate into its HIV treatment and prevention work, projects that deal with PMTCT, medical male circumcision, men who have sex with men, ART, paediatrics and more.

NIMART (Nurse Initiated Management of Antiretroviral Treatment)

• As part of Anova’s continuing commitment to capacity building in South Africa’s public healthcare sector, the organisation welcomed the government’s decision on NIMART and jumped at the opportunity to assist through running training sessions.

Antiretroviral Treatment (ART)

• Anova is instrumental in the management of ART at clinics run by the following of its projects:

Men who have Sex with Men (MSM)

• Anova provides support for men who have sex with men via its Health4Men initiative - active in Cape Town and Soweto.

ART Paediatrics

• Along with such organisations as Kidszpositive, Anova supports various projects that aim to assist children who have started or need to start ART

• Projects: Tygerberg Infectious Diseases Family Clinic, Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital, Du Noon and Albow Gardens Community Outreach, Tirisanong

Mental health and HIV

• As in many public healthcare systems, mental health is seldom prioritised in South Africa. Neuropsychiatric disorders are highly prevalent in PLWHA

TB and HIV

• South Africa has the fourth-highest burden of TB in the world and also has the largest number of drug-resistant TB cases reported worldwide.

Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT)

• Preventing the transmission of HIV from a mother to her unborn child is a key intervention in curbing the spread of HIV

Medical Male Circumcision (MMC)

• The Centre for HIV/AIDS Prevention Studies (CHAPS) seeks to perform and support innovative and safe medical male circumcisionprocedures as part of a minimum HIVprevention package. Anova is the main funding partner of CHAPS.

HIV and the Media

• What images are being presented to the public? Are the writers, reporters and scriptwriters informed about the nature of the disease and those that suffer from it

HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT)

• Anova supports the government’s commitment to test as many South Africans as possible (The new HCT campaign endeavours to test 15 million people by July 2011).
